Navigation Restriction - Tweed River, Murwillumbah - Dragon boat races

(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.12)

Tweed River, Murwillumbah
12:30pm to 3:30pm – Saturday 8 September 2018
7:30am to 4:30pm – Sunday 9 September 2018

Vessel operators are advised that a Special Event pursuant to Section 12(2) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 is to be held on the Tweed River at Murwillumbah from 12:30pm to 3:30pm on Saturday 8 September 2018, and from 7:30am to 4:30pm on Sunday 9 September 2018.

Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, Roads and Maritime has granted an Exclusive Use Aquatic Licence to the Coolangatta - Mt Warning Dragons Boat Club Inc to conduct the event, and an Exclusion Zone (‘the Zone’) will be established on the navigable waters of the Tweed River between the above times as follows:

  • Saturday 8 September 2018 - between Grassy Island at Condong and approximately 1km south of Murwillumbah Road Bridge.
  • Sunday 9 September 2018 -  within the 200m buoyed course area adjacent to the Murwillumbah Rowing Club, Murwillumbah.

The Zone will be marked by buoys and patrolled by control vessels.

Roads and Maritime advise that in relation to the Zone;

  1. Persons within the vicinity of the Zone must comply with any directions given by any Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
  2. No unauthorised vessels or persons are permitted to enter the Zone and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.12(5) — Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)

Provision has been made for a ‘transit zone’ along the south eastern side of the river, within which local vessel traffic must transit at a safe distance and speed and in such a manner so as to minimise vessel wash, and must comply with any direction given by any Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety.
