Navigation Restriction - Murray River, Barham
(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.12)
Murray River, Barham
BARHAM BRIDGE WORKS
Tuesday 27 February to Friday 29 September 2017
Vessel operators are advised that due to bridge works, a Special Event pursuant to Section 12(2) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 has been declared and the Murray River will be closed for 150 metres either side of the Barham Bridge from Monday 27 February to Friday 29 September 2017 inclusive.
Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, an Exclusion Zone (‘the Zone’) will be established on the navigable waters of the Murray River 150 metres either side of the Barham Bridge, Barham, during weekdays only and between 7am and 6pm.
The Zone will be marked by channel blocked markers, buoyage, and patrolled by authorised officers.
In addition, for the duration of the maintenance and pursuant to section 12(3) of the Marine Safety Act 1998, SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS will be imposed on vessels that navigate through the area outside those hours and the Zone is specified as follows:
- From Monday 27 February to 31 March 2017, the vertical clearance will be restricted to 5.2 metres when measured from the river gauge datum, and
- From Saturday 1 April 2017, the vertical clearance will be restricted to 7.0 metres when measured from the river gauge datum.
Vessel operators can determine the available vertical clearance under the bridge, and therefore possible air draught of a vessel whereby it could pass under the bridge, by subtracting the maximum vertical clearance detailed above from the prevailing river level. An appropriate safety margin to should also be applied.
The river level conditions can be found at http://waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/drr/murray.
A closed (blocked) channel will be marked during the day by a series of three shapes in a vertical line comprising ball – triangle – ball, and during the night by a series of three lights in a vertical line comprising red – green – red.
Roads and Maritime advises:
- Persons within the vicinity of the Zone must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
- No unauthorised vessels are permitted to enter the Zone and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s12(5) - Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)
