Navigation Restriction - Murray River, Barham - Exclusion zone - bridge works
(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.11)
Murray River, Barham
Exclusion zone - bridge works
Friday 20 July to Saturday 1 December 2018
Vessel operators are advised that as the result of an ongoing maintenance program, bridge works are occurring on the Barham Bridge, which spans the Murray River at Barham. Pursuant to Section 11(1) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 an Exclusion Zone prohibiting all vessels from entering the zone has been declared from Friday 20 July until Saturday 1 December 2018 inclusive.
Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, an Exclusion Zone (‘the Zone’) will be established on the navigable waters of the Murray River at the location of the Barham Bridge, Barham, between the above dates.
The only navigable channel during the works is the central channel under the Lift Span, meaning navigation through all other spans is prohibited.
The zone comprises all waters other than the marked navigable channel, which will be marked by local buoyage, channel blocked markers, and will be patrolled by authorised officers.
Vessel operators are advised to be aware that the vertical clearance through the available span is 5.3m above riverbed - which will be reduced naturally as the prevailing water column rises on any day. Vessel operators are advised to exercise caution and apply an appropriate safety margin when navigating in this location.
All vessel operators and persons using the waters specified above should keep a proper lookout and exercise extreme caution near the bridge and check vessel heights at a slow speed prior to navigating through the central channel.
The river level conditions can be found at http://waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/drr/murray.
A closed (blocked) channel will be marked during the day by a series of three shapes in a vertical line comprising ball – triangle – ball, and during the night by a series of three lights in a vertical line comprising red – green – red.
Marine Notice SO1838 also relates.
Roads and Maritime advises:
- Persons within the vicinity of the Zone must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
- No unauthorised vessels are permitted to enter the Zone and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s11(4) - Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)
