About this project
Charles Kay Drive and Brunswick Road safety improvements
Work on the Charles Kay and Brunswick Road intersection was completed in February 2016.
The intersection upgrade included installing traffic lights at the Charles Kay Drive and Brunswick Road intersections, widening Terrigal Drive between Duffys Road and Charles Kay Drive, providing a shared pedestrian and cycle path between Duffys Road and Bellbird Avenue and providing pedestrian traffic lights east of Duffys Road to improve safety for pedestrians crossing Terrigal Drive.
Terrigal Drive Intersection at Jessie Hurley Drive and Portsmouth Road
Work on the Terrigal Drive intersection at Jessie Hurley Drive and Portsmouth Road was completed in May 2014.
The upgrade involved building a dedicated right turn and left turn lanes into Portsmouth Road and safety improvements at the Jessie Hurley Drive intersection.
A right turn ban was implemented for motorists turning out of Portsmouth Road, although they can use the nearby Mobbs Road roundabout to perform a u-turn. Pedestrian facilities have also been improved.
Intersection of Terrigal Drive and Bellbird Avenue
This intersection was identified for safety improvements due to a history of rear end crashes. There was also an issue between vehicles turning right and buses attempting to safely stop to pick up and drop off passengers.
A roundabout has now been constructed at the intersection of Terrigal Drive and Bellbird Avenue to improve traffic and safety conditions. The improvements at this location also included formalising bus bays and improving pedestrian connections.
The roundabout allows motorists to undertake a u-turn where they are unable to cross the median safely between Charles Kay Drive and Bellbird Avenue.
Construction was completed in September 2011.
Intersection of Terrigal Drive, Chetwynd Road and Tarragal Glen Avenue
This intersection was identified for safety improvements due to congestion during peak periods, a known accident history, and to address pedestrian safety issues at this location.
The improvements at this location consist of:
- Part-time (traffic activated) traffic signals on the Tarragal Glen Avenue leg of the roundabout, to improve traffic flow on Terrigal Drive, particularly during the afternoon peak
- Outside of peak traffic demand, when there are no cars queued up, the traffic lights remain off and the roundabout operates as normal
- A pedestrian refuge on the western leg of the roundabout with a footpath connecting to the existing bus bay.
Construction was completed in 31 August 2010.
Intersection of Terrigal Drive and Havenview Road
Safety improvements near this intersection involving a pedestrian refuge and bus bay were completed in June 2010.
This intersection was identified for safety improvements to ensure safe pedestrian access to and from the bus stop. Buses also had issues stopping at the bus stop, due to vehicles parking close to the bus stop.
The improvements included a formalised bus stop, and a pedestrian refuge to assist with crossing Terrigal Drive.
