M1 Pacific Motorway and Newcastle Interchange maintenance closure
Roads and Maritime Services is carrying out essential maintenance work on a 10 kilometre section of the M1 Pacific Motorway and at the M1 Newcastle Interchange from 23 August to 31 August.
Updates and announcements
Roads and Maritime Services will temporarily close a 10 kilometre section of the M1 Pacific Motorway to carry out a number of essential maintenance projects from 23 August to 31 August. The motorway will be closed in one direction at a time between the Hunter Expressway interchange and John Renshaw Drive intersection. The Newcastle Interchange northbound off-ramp toward Newcastle will also be temporarily closed for essential bridge repairs.
The closures will be carried out over six nights to minimise disruptions to road users and reduce the impact on local businesses and residents.
The M1 northbound off-ramp at the Newcastle Interchange will be closed to traffic between 8pm and 5am on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 August.
The southbound carriageway will be closed to traffic between 8pm and 5am on Monday 28 August and Tuesday 29 August.
The northbound carriageway and the northbound off-ramp at the Newcastle Interchange will be closed to traffic between 8pm and 5am on Wednesday 30 August and Thursday 31 August.
Closures may also be required between 8pm and 5am on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 September as a wet weather contingency option. Electronic message signs will direct motorists if an additional closure is carried out.
All Newcastle bound motorists exiting the M1 northbound will detour via the Cardiff exit onto George Booth Drive and Cameron Park Drive as shown in the detour maps. This detour should not affect travel time.
During the M1 closures a detour will be in place for all motorists via John Renshaw Drive and the Hunter Expressway as shown in the detour maps.
Electronic message signs will be in place to give advance notice of changed traffic conditions and to help motorists plan their journeys. During the closures the detour routes will be clearly signposted.
The detour is expected to add around 10 kilometres to journeys, which is about 10 to 15 minutes travel time.
No work will be carried out on the detour routes during the closures to help minimise further impacts to journey times.
There are restrictions on John Renshaw Drive for heavy vehicles over 2.5 metres wide and oversized vehicles are encouraged to plan their journeys on the motorway outside the closure times.

Maintenance closures are being carried out on the M1 Pacific Motorway as part of our commitment to improving the safety of road workers near live traffic.
About 50 workers will be engaged over the six nights to carry out a large volume of work in a short period of time, which would not be possible with single lane closures in place.
Work activities include concrete bridge repairs, road surface repairs, drainage improvements, shoulder improvements, safety barrier repairs, bridge maintenance, line marking, litter collection and vegetation maintenance.
