Flood focus group
Roads and Maritime recently invited community representatives to participate in a flood focus group to give local residents a chance to understand and contribute to the flood assessment process. Nineteen community representatives were selected and are now working with the project team and technical specialists.
The first meeting was held on Monday, 16 March 2015 and provided members with an update on the project from Roads and Maritime, followed by presentations by Wollongong and Shellharbour City Councils on flood modelling carried out in the catchment areas relevant to the proposed Albion Park Rail bypass.
The second meeting was held on Wednesday, 1 April 2015. At this meeting an overview of the flooding assessment and modelling that has been undertaken by Roads and Maritime was presented to the group.
This provided the group with an overview of existing conditions, the flood modelling approach and the expected results.
The third meeting was held on Monday, 18 May 2015. At this meeting the group broke into three smaller groups and a detailed presentation and analysis was given by the project team on:
- Macquarie Rivulet floodplain
- Duck Creek floodplain
- Horsley Creek floodplain.
These presentations provided an opportunity to view modelling for each of the three catchments. This smaller group format gave the group a better opportunity to ask questions, understand the complex information being presented and provide feedback.

The broader community will have an opportunity to comment on flood studies and other investigations during display of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) later this year.
