Mount Ousley heavy vehicle rest area

Roads and Maritime Services is building a north bound heavy vehicle rest area near the intersection of the M1 Princes Motorway and Clive Bissell Drive, Mount Ousley.

The project will provide a significant upgrade of the existing informal rest area including new facilities, additional parking and safer access for heavy vehicles.

The Australian and NSW Governments have provided $8.09 million to construct the facility.

Updates and announcements

September 2016

Work is continuing on the Mount Ousley heavy vehicle rest area upgrade, with the left hand turn into Clive Bissell Drive from the M1 northbound closed to traffic from 8pm Tuesday 20 September until the project is complete.

This is to provide access for construction vehicles to the site for the duration of the project.

Motorists wishing to access Mount Keira will be detoured via M1, Picton Road and Mount Keira Road and should allow an additional five minutes to journey times. Alternatively motorists could travel along Mount Keira Road from West Wollongong. For more information please see the detour map.

Further night work is planned for about six weeks during October and November, excluding public holidays, to build the new rest area access lane. We will provide further details to the community closer to the start date of the night work.

Outside work hours, including during peak times all lanes will be open and there will be no reduced speed limits in place.

Preliminary work on the upgrade started in May and the project is expected to be completed by mid-2017, weather permitting.

During construction, a temporary northbound Heavy Vehicle Parking Bay will be operating at the former toll gate site located at Waterfall.

Please keep to speed limits and follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs. For the latest traffic updates, you can call 132 701, visit or download the Live Traffic NSW App.

Project background

The M1 Princes Motorway is an important freight link between Wollongong and Sydney.
The current informal rest area near the intersection of the M1 Motorway and Clive Bissell Drive does not meet National Transport Commission and Roads and Maritime Services guidelines.

Roads and Maritime is planning the upgrade of the existing informal rest area to better cater for freight vehicles.

The current site has been identified as the best location to capture heavy vehicle activity.

The heavy vehicle activity includes:

  • Short haul trips between mines on Picton and Appin Roads and Port Kembla
  • Car delivery from Port Kembla to Sydney
  • General freight using the Princes Highway or Picton road from the South Coast.

Project benefits

The project will provide:

  • Safer access into the area
  • Parking space for 10 Heavy Vehicles
  • Toilets, rubbish bins and sheltered areas including picnic tables
  • Designated space for Driver Reviver operations
  • A rest area for truck drivers to assist manage driver fatigue.
