Updates and announcements

Work is starting on Tuesday 7 November 2017 to realign the intersection of Memorial Drive and the Princes Highway at North Wollongong. It is expected that the work will take around 12 months to complete, weather permitting.

Working hours will be 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Most of the work will take place off the road to limit the impact to motorists. We will inform the community in advance if any lane closures are required.

Background

The Princes Highway and Memorial Drive are both regionally significant State Roads which are used as key commuter, tourist and freight routes within the Illawarra.

Over time there has been increased use of the northbound exit ramp, from Memorial Drive to the Princes Highway, resulting in queuing particularly for vehicles turning right.

Overview

The NSW Government has allocated $6.73 million to improve traffic efficiency and road user safety by widening the existing ramp from three to four lanes and reconfiguring the intersection to allow dual right and left turns onto the Princes Highway from Memorial Drive.

Project benefits

  • Improve traffic efficiency by reducing vehicle queue lengths
  • Improve road safety by minimising conflict between stationary vehicles and those travelling at speed.
