Updates and announcements

Work started on Tuesday 7 November 2017 to realign the intersection of Memorial Drive and the Princes Highway at North Wollongong. It is expected that the work will take around 12 months to complete, weather permitting.

To complete the next stage of work we need to work on the road to lay cables, upgrade the traffic signals and resurface the road at the intersection.

To reduce the impact on motorists we will be working at night between 8pm and 4am from Sunday to Thursday and expect to complete the work by the end of August, weather permitting. We will not be working on Friday and Saturday nights.

There will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe. The exit ramp may need to be closed to traffic intermittently during work hours and detours will be in place. Please check electronic message boards for up to date information.

At other times lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times.

Pedestrian access across the intersection will be restricted. Signage will be in place to direct pedestrians to the opposite side of the road from the worksite.

Background

The Princes Highway and Memorial Drive are both regionally significant State Roads which are used as key commuter, tourist and freight routes within the Illawarra.

Over time there has been increased use of the northbound exit ramp, from Memorial Drive to the Princes Highway, resulting in queuing particularly for vehicles turning right.

Overview

The NSW Government has allocated $6.73 million to improve traffic efficiency and road user safety by widening the existing ramp from three to four lanes and reconfiguring the intersection to allow dual right and left turns onto the Princes Highway from Memorial Drive.

Project benefits

  • Improve traffic efficiency by reducing vehicle queue lengths
  • Improve road safety by minimising conflict between stationary vehicles and those travelling at speed.
