Updates and announcements

Work has been completed on the realignment of the intersection of Memorial Drive and the Princes Highway at North Wollongong.

The $6.73 million project widened the existing three-lane exit ramp to four lanes to help reduce delays for motorists and improve safety at the busy intersection.

There are now two lanes available to both left and right turning vehicles travelling on the Memorial Drive northbound exit onto the Princes Highway.

All traffic lanes have been reopened and speed limits have been reinstated.

Background

The Princes Highway and Memorial Drive are both regionally significant State Roads which are used as key commuter, tourist and freight routes within the Illawarra.

Over time there has been increased use of the northbound exit ramp, from Memorial Drive to the Princes Highway, resulting in queuing particularly for vehicles turning right.

Overview

The NSW Government has allocated $6.73 million to improve traffic efficiency and road user safety by widening the existing ramp from three to four lanes and reconfiguring the intersection to allow dual right and left turns onto the Princes Highway from Memorial Drive.

Project benefits

  • Improve traffic efficiency by reducing vehicle queue lengths
  • Improve road safety by minimising conflict between stationary vehicles and those travelling at speed.
