Flood review 2012
A major storm event in January 2012 resulted in flooding and damage to properties in the Blackadder and Corindi areas. There is concern within the local community that the new road may have contributed to the impact of the flood.
Roads and Maritime Services received a number of calls from local residents and as a result began investigating the flood event. A public meeting was held on 8 February 2012 to update the community on the progress of investigations and to gather feedback and information from affected property owners.
One outcome from the public meeting was that Roads and Maritime would engage an independent consultant to review the project design to determine if:
- The upgrade affected the flow of waters associated with the flood event of 26 January 2012
- Further improvements to the highway would be desirable having regard to any effects of the highway on the movement of waters.
Roads and Maritime engaged Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) to carry out the flood study review. A community information session was held on Thursday 29 March 2012 at the Yarrawarra Cultural Centre, Corindi Beach. This session gave community members the opportunity to meet SMEC, discuss their experience and concerns, provide information about the event and learn about the process and methods being used in the review. Additional property surveys were identified and completed in May 2012.
What's happing now?
The Pacific Highway Blackadder Safety Work, Flood Impact Review (August 2012) is now available. The review gathered information from previous flood level surveys, flood markers, ground surveys, local landowner information, rainfall data from the Bureau of Meteorology for daily rainfall stations and property owners' photographic records.
The review looked at the Corindi River catchment area to the confluence with Cassons Creek, including Corindi River, Cassons Creek and Blackadder Creek watercourses.
Roads and Maritime has also prepared a summary report that outlines the main findings from the review.
