Motorists advised of controlled rock blasting at Glenugie for Pacific Highway Upgrade

Road and Maritime Services advises motorists controlled rock blasting will be carried out near the Pacific Highway at Glenugie as part of the Woolgoolga and Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade.

Controlled blasting will be carried out on Wednesday 29 June between 1pm and 1.30pm near Franklins Road.

For the safety of workers and motorists all traffic on the Pacific Highway will be temporarily stopped during controlled blasting.

Motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes for each controlled blast and are advised to plan travel around these times or allow extra time for their journeys.

Project overview

Roads and Maritime Services has engaged Civil Mining Construction to build Section 2 of the Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade.

The Halfway Creek to Glenugie upgrade is about 12 kilometres long and will join with the existing Glenugie upgrade completed in February 2012. It is expected that work on Woolgoolga to Halfway Creek section will be finished in 2017.

Key features of this section include twin bridges over Halfway Creek and Wells Crossing Creek as well as a wide median to assist animals crossing at Newfoundland State Forest.

The State and Federal Governments have committed to upgrading the Pacific Highway by 2020.

Upcoming activities

October to December 2016

Upcoming work on the project will include:

  • Moving Pacific Highway traffic on to the new northbound highway lanes between Kungala Road and Wells Crossing at Halfway Creek including opening the new northbound Halfway Creek bridge
  • Continuing earthwork and drainage and installation of culverts
  • Continuing concrete paving and saw-cutting
  • Continuing revegetation along the new highway
  • Completing Halfway Creek and Wells Crossing bridges
  • Continuing crushing and screening of select material near Franklins Road at Glenugie
  • Property adjustments
  • Monitoring dust, noise and water quality.
