South Nowra - Proposed heavy vehicle rest area at Rotary Park - Princes Highway
Roads and Maritime Services is furthering its investigations for a possible upgrade of the existing light vehicle rest area to include provision of a heavy vehicle rest area on the Princes Highway at South Nowra.
Updates and announcements
Roads and Maritime is furthering its investigations to upgrade the existing light vehicle rest area to include provision of a heavy vehicle rest area on the Princes Highway at South Nowra. Roads and Maritime is continuing to work closely with Shoalhaven City Council to develop design options for the rest area upgrade.
A northbound heavy vehicle rest area is required on the Princes Highway to be compliant with Roads and Maritime’s Strategy for Major Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas on Key Rural Freight Routes in NSW. For a copy of the heavy vehicle rest area strategy, contact the project team at SouthernProjects@rms.nsw.gov.au.
Roads and Maritime originally investigated building a new heavy vehicle rest area at Meroo Meadow as part of the proposed Princes Highway upgrade between Berry and Bomaderry. However Roads and Maritime’s preferred option is to upgrade the existing light vehicle rest area at Rotary Park at South Nowra. The community was encouraged to provide feedback on the proposal in October 2012.
Preliminary investigations indicate upgrading the Rotary Park facility to accommodate heavy vehicles appears to be feasible. Roads and Maritime is continuing to work closely with Shoalhaven City Council to develop design options for the rest area upgrade. If the Rotary Park facility is not found to be feasible as part of these further investigations, Roads and Maritime will investigate alternative sites in consultation with Shoalhaven City Council, the community and stakeholders. Roads and Maritime will continue to keep you informed as this project progresses.
The proposed upgrade would include:
- Parking for both light, heavy vehicles (a maximum of eight heavy vehicles, up to 25 metres in length, not 19 metres in length as previously advised) and caravans
- Upgraded road pavement and line marking for parking areas
- Safe access from Flinders Road
- Improved amenities within the rest area, including an upgraded toilet
- Retaining as many trees and as much green space as possible.
