Background

The NSW Government announced the Sydney Clearways Strategy as one of its key initiatives to reduce congestion on Sydney’s major roads. $121 million was committed to implementing the strategy and installing new clearways on Sydney’s road network.

Installing new and extended clearways on weekdays and weekends can help reduce congestion in many areas of Sydney by allowing motorists to use all traffic lanes.

Since 2013, we have installed over 270 kilometres of new and extended clearways across some of Sydney’s busiest road corridors. We are continuing to investigate where new and extended clearways would help ease congestion and establish more reliable travel times for motorists across the network. You can find further information on the Sydney Clearways Strategy page.

What is a clearway?

A clearway is a section of road where stopping and parking is not allowed during the times shown on the clearway sign. Clearways are put on key arterial roads where traffic is often heavy and congested.

You must not stop or park on a length of road signed as a clearway during its hours of operation. If your vehicle is parked in a clearway during its hours of operation, it will risk being towed and fines applied. Public buses and taxis are permitted to stop in a clearway to set down or pick up passengers.

Clearways hours

To make it easier for motorists, the parking signposting on Cleveland Street is being simplified. Roads and Maritime is introducing new weekend and public holiday and extended weekday clearways on Cleveland Street between City Road, Camperdown and Anzac Parade, Moore Park.

The new and extended clearways will operate in both directions.

There will be no changes to existing parking restrictions outside the new clearway hours.

New clearways Weekdays, weekends and public holidays
City Road to South Dowling Street 6am to 7 pm (both directions)
South Dowling Street to Anzac Parade Clearways at all times (both directions) and 24 hours bus lane (partial westbound)
