Updates and announcements

Roads and Maritime Services is improving traffic flow and travel time reliability by adding a third eastbound lane on Parramatta Road between Sloane Street, Haberfield and Flood Street, Leichhardt.

We will start removal of the median barrier from Friday 4 January 2019 and the work is expected to be finished in late March 2019, weather permitting.

Most of the work will be carried out during the night to reduce impacts to road users. Generally, our night work hours will be between:

  • 8pm and 5am, Sunday to Friday morning
  • 8pm Friday to 8am Saturday
  • 8pm Saturday to 9am Sunday.

Pedestrian access to the Taverners Hill Light Rail Station will be maintained.

Project background

Roads and Maritime Services has investigated options to improve traffic flow and travel time reliability along Parramatta Road between Sloane Street, Haberfield and Flood Street, Leichhardt. This 400 metre section of Parramatta Road is currently a five lane divided arterial road between Sloane Street, Haberfield and Flood Street, Leichhardt.

The improvement will include the reallocation of existing road space on Parramatta Road to provide an additional eastbound traffic lane and an extended dedicated right turn lane from Parramatta Road in to West Street, Petersham. Once completed this section of Parramatta Road will have capacity for six lanes, three eastbound and three westbound.

Key features

The improvements include:

  • reconfiguring the eastbound merge to include a third eastbound lane from Sloane Street, Haberfield to Flood Street, Leichhardt
  • extending the right turn lane by around 30 metres from Parramatta Road in to West Street, Petersham
  • adjusting the traffic light phasing at the intersection of Parramatta Road and West Street, Petersham
  • reconstructing the median
  • new line marking and asphalting.

Project benefits

The improvement of this 400 metre section of Parramatta Road will:

  • help ease existing congestion and improve traffic flow
  • provide better network integration between Parramatta Road and the New M4 project
  • increase capacity to six lanes, three eastbound and three westbound
  • reduce vehicles queuing to turn right into West Street, Petersham blocking the through lanes on Parramatta Road
  • improve travel time reliability.

Next steps

We will start removal of the median barrier from Friday 4 January 2019 and the work is expected to be completed in early 2019, weather permitting.

We will continue to keep the community updated as the project progresses.
