Princes Highway and Rockdale Plaza Drive, Rockdale

The NSW Government is funding this proposal as part of its $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Point Program which aims to ease congestion and improve journey reliability on Sydney’s key southern corridors.

Updates and announcements

Roads and Maritime Services invited feedback in August, September and October on improvements at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Rockdale Plaza Drive, Rockdale. View or download the community consultation report (PDF, 2.04Mb) summarising the feedback and responses, including a community notification (PDF,611Kb) that was distributed to residents.

Background

The Princes Highway is an important urban arterial road, and forms part of the A1 road corridor. The A1 connects the south coast of NSW and Wollongong to Sydney. It also provides access to major roads including the M5 Motorway, A3 King Georges Road, A36 Princes Highway (city) and M1 Pacific Highway.

The intersection is currently congested due to the Princes Highway being reduced to two lanes southbound between Lister Avenue and Ashton Street. Congestion is also caused by traffic waiting to turn right into Rockdale Plaza Drive westbound, queuing back and blocking the southbound through traffic on Princes Highway.

Proposal

The proposal includes:

  • road widening on the eastern verge of Princes Highway to allow for three through lanes southbound between Lister and Ashton Street
  • road widening on the eastern verge of Princes Highway to lengthen the right turn bay on Princes Highway into Rockdale Plaza Drive
  • road widening on the eastern verge of Princes Highway to allow relocation of indented bus bay
  • construction of new footpath on the eastern verge of Princes Highway
  • bridge widening over Muddy Creek
  • modification to the intersection for a left turn slip lane from Princes Highway southbound into Rockdale Plaza Drive
  • modification to the intersection to allow for left turn slip lane and median from Rockdale Plaza Drive onto Princes Highway southbound
  • minor tree removal.

Benefits of the proposal

Benefits would include:

  • improved capacity and efficiency of the Princes Highway corridor, specifically for southbound vehicles on Princes Highway near the Rockdale Plaza Drive intersection
  • improved road safety due to reduction of traffic waiting to turn right into Rockdale Plaza Drive, westbound, queuing back and blocking the southbound through traffic on Princes Highway.
