Northern Beaches Hospital road upgrade project

The NSW Government is investing $500 million to upgrade the roads around the new Northern Beaches Hospital.

The upgrades will provide customers with a better travel experience, increased capacity on the road network and improved access through the area, including for pedestrians and cyclists.

Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) has been engaged by Roads and Maritime to carry out the project.

Construction well underway along Warringah Road and Forest Way.

Updates and announcements

Gas main installation work on Forest Way / Warringah Road and along Rabbett Street

Roads and Maritime Services will carry out high pressure gas main installation work on Forest Way / Warringah Road and along Rabbett Street between Forest Way and the Rabbett Street roundabout. There will be some vegetation removal as part of this work.

This work will take place from Tuesday 16 January to Friday 30 March, weather permitting. Some of this work will be carried out during our standard construction hours between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.

Due to the high volume of traffic and pedestrians in the area, the work on Forest Way / Warringah Road and Rabbett Street between Forest Way and Holland Crescent (south) will be carried out outside standard construction hours for safety reasons and to limit delays on the road network. This out of hours work will be carried out between 8pm and 5am from Monday to Friday.

Hilmer Street intersection upgrade and traffic changes

Roads and Maritime Services will continue to upgrade the intersection of Hilmer Street and Warringah Road. The work will involve building the approach slabs for the Hilmer Street road bridge over the Warringah Road underpass.

To allow for the intersection upgrade, Hilmer Street will become one-way, with access into Hilmer Street from Warringah Road temporality closed for up to 14 weeks (weather permitting) from Monday 8 January.

During these traffic changes motorists are advised to use Fitzpatrick Avenue East. When the work is complete, all turning movements will be reinstated allowing full access to and from Hilmer Street from Warringah Road.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, although minor temporary detours may be in place during the work. Due to the high volume of traffic and pedestrians in the area and to limit delays on the road network, some of the work will need to be carried out at night between 8pm and 5am from Monday to Friday.

Allambie Road and Warringah Road traffic changes

Roads and Maritime Services will change traffic conditions between Rodborough and Allambie roads and the intersection of Warringah Road and Allambie Road. These changes will take place from Monday 8 January for about three weeks (weather permitting).  The kerbside lane on Warringah Road eastbound between Rodborough Road and Allambie Road will be closed.

Changed line markings will allow for two lanes of through traffic and one lane for right hand turning from Warringah Road into Allambie Road. Delays are expected for eastbound traffic on Warringah Road, particularly for vehicles turning right. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

Due to the high volume of traffic and pedestrians in the area, this work will be carried out between 8pm on Monday 8 January and 5am on Tuesday 9 January. Additional night work may be required to complete the drainage work.

Frenchs Forest Road and Naree Road traffic changes

As part of the road upgrade Roads and Maritime Services has implemented temporary changed traffic conditions in October along Frenchs Forest Road and Naree Road. The first few weeks of the scheme saw motorists and the local community experience longer than expected delays and a significant increase in travel times.

We have worked closely with traffic analysts from the Transport Management Centre and were able to quickly identify the traffic congestion. We have also received comments from the community and are listening to the feedback. We have put changes in place to modify traffic signals at key intersections to improve travel times for motorists. These changes are having a positive effect and we are seeing travel times improving during the peak times.

Frenchs Forest Road and Naree Road is one way for westbound traffic only.

The eastbound traffic lane along Frenchs Forest Road and Naree Road is closed between Forest Way and Patanga Road. This is a temporary arrangement for up to 10 months.

Eastbound traffic will need to use alternative routes along Forest Way and Warringah Road. Access to and from several of the side streets off Frenchs Forest Road will also be impacted.

View or download the detour map or the kiss and ride map on Frenchs Forest Road in front of the Forest High School.

The kiss and ride on Frenchs Forest Road in front of Forest High School has been reopened in the existing space. There are three to four car spaces available to help with pick up and drop off.

For questions and answers on the Frenchs Forest Road and Naree Road traffic changes see Frequently Asked Questions.

We will continue to monitor the changes and work closely with the Transport Management Centre and the community. In the meantime, please make sure you plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

Thank you for your patience during this work.

Forest Way traffic changes

As part of the Northern Beaches Road upgrade, temporary traffic changes along Forest Way were implemented on Wednesday 6 September.

One lane is closed northbound on Forest Way, between Warringah Road and Adams Street.

The new arrangement will include two lanes of traffic northbound and three lanes of traffic southbound. This arrangement will be in place for a minimum of six months.

Please note the no right turn in and out of Naree Road to and from Forest Way will be maintained during this period.

We ask motorists to observe reduced road work speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs and apologise for any inconvenience.
