The NSW Government is funding this project at the intersection of Kingsway and Woolooware Road as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program which aims to ease congestion and improve journey reliability on Sydney’s key southern corridors.

Project background

The Kingsway and Woolooware Road intersection currently experiences a high volume of traffic and congestion, which results in delays during weekday peak traffic periods. Due to insufficient capacity of the existing right turn bay from Kingsway into Woolooware Road on the eastern approach, right turning vehicles are currently overflowing, resulting in vehicles obstructing traffic in the adjacent through lanes.

Consequently, cars turning right are queueing out of the dedicated right turn bay on the Kingsway and are blocking adjacent through lanes. This affects traffic flow resulting in increased delays for through traffic along the Kingsway in the eastbound direction, particularly during peak periods.

Project features

The improvements include:

  • extending the existing right turn lane eastbound on Kingsway by about 60 metres
  • removing and replacing asphalt
  • lane widening and resurfacing the kerb and median
  • removing the existing grass in the existing median
  • new road markings.

Project benefits

The project will:

  • improve journey time reliability and reduce travel times for road users
  • improve traffic flow at the intersection Kingsway and Woolooware Road.
  • increase capacity for vehicles turning right from Kingsway into Woolooware Road.
