Updates and announcements

Field investigation work

Roads and Maritime Services completed geotechnical investigations and survey work for the proposed Denmark Link Road in September 2017. We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this work.

Survey and investigation work

From Monday 19 June to Friday 15 September 2017, weather permitting, Roads and Maritime will carry out survey and investigation work to help develop the design for the proposed Denmark Link Road.

The work, including traffic modelling, service utility and environmental / heritage investigations, will take place along the proposed corridor between 7am and 6pm.

The investigation work will be carried out on the road reserve or on private property along the proposed corridor with minimal impact on the community. Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Project background

Denmark Link Road is a proposed new link road between Garfield Road West, Riverstone and the Westminster Street bridge, Schofields. This new link road would alleviate traffic congestion along Garfield Road West around the railway level crossing at Riverstone and would provide an alternate local connection for light vehicles to cross the Richmond railway line, to avoid the Riverstone town centre.

The preferred option would provide a link road from Garfield Road West, Riverstone via Denmark Road intersection to West Parade. West Parade would be extended to the Westminster Street bridge, Schofields. The proposal would link to new traffic lights that were completed in September 2016 at the Westminster Street and Railway Terrace intersection.

The Denmark Link Road is part of the North West Growth Centre Road Network Strategy short-term work and is subject to funding availability.

The preferred Denmark Link Road option would:

  • reduce congestion and delays that are currently being experienced at the Garfield Road railway level crossing at Riverstone
  • provide a second local road connection for motorists wishing to use the Westminster Street bridge, alleviating congestion on Garfield Road
  • meets the future traffic needs for the area.

The preferred Denmark Link Road option is a two lane local road with a footpath on one side. The proposal includes:

  • an intersection at Garfield Road West and Denmark Road with a right-turn bay for traffic waiting to enter Denmark Road at Riverstone
  • improvements to the existing Denmark Road
  • a new link road between Denmark Road and West Parade
  • new intersections at Carlton Street and West Parade
  • extension of West Parade to connect near the Westminster Street bridge at Schofields.

Selection of a preferred corridor

A number of options were developed for Denmark Link Road and an assessment was carried out with key stakeholders to select a preferred option.

An Options Report has been prepared detailing the process carried out in the selection of the preferred option.

Roads and Maritime invited comments from the community and stakeholders on the preferred option for Denmark Link Road in November 2015. A community consultation report summarising and responding to feedback received during this consultation period is now available.

What happens next?

Roads and Maritime is continuing planning and field investigation work to inform the concept design and Review of Environmental Factors, which will be displayed for community consultation in 2018. We will keep stakeholders informed of the project’s progress during the planning phase.
