NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Roads Maritime and Freight, Duncan Gay, officially opened the upgraded road between Townson Road and Elara Boulevard on 23 November 2016.

Project background

Roads and Maritime Services started major construction work on the Richmond Road upgrade from Townson Road to 900 metres north of Garfield Road West on Monday 28 July 2014. The upgraded road allows for additional traffic as a result of housing and employment opportunities in the North West Priority Land Release Area.

The NSW Government has provided $56 million and $40 million from the Housing Acceleration Fund for Stage 2.

Project features

  • Upgrading the road to a four-lane divided road with a landscaped central median. The upgrade provides for the road to be widened to six lanes in the future
  • An 80km/h speed limit
  • Two metre wide shoulders
  • A three metre wide, off-road shared pedestrian/cyclist path on the western side of the road. There will also be a provision for another shared path on the eastern side of the road in the future
  • New traffic lights at Quarry Road and South Street
  • New traffic lights at Vine Street West/Pius Lane
  • Realignment of the Garfield Road West intersection including upgraded traffic lights and a new service road to provide left-in access from Richmond Road to the service station, primary school and fire brigade on Garfield Road West.
  • Bus priority capability at traffic lights and indented bus bays on each side of Richmond Road
  • Designated turning lanes, and bicycle and pedestrian crossings at traffic lights..
