Schofields Road upgrade and extension

Schofields Road is being upgraded to become a major east-west connection between Windsor Road and Richmond Road. Once this $340 million upgrade and extension is complete it will link the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres and help to better meet the future transport needs of the North West Priority Land Release Area.

Updates and announcements

Weekend night work and a temporary road closure at the intersection of South Street and Carnarvon Road, Schofields from Friday 3 March 2017

The NSW Government is funding the $340 million upgrade of Schofields Road between Windsor Road and Richmond Road. Stage 3 of this upgrade is between Veron Road and Richmond Road. It includes extending Schofields Road from Veron Road, across Eastern Creek,  to Carnarvon Road and widening the South Street alignment.

Roads and Maritime Services is continuing to deliver this important project. As part of this work we are preparing to complete the intersection work at South Street  and Carnarvon Road, Schofields to advance with the Schofields Road Upgrade.

To prepare for this traffic change, we will be working continuously from 5pm Friday 3 March until 5am Monday 6 March, weather permitting.  During this work access into the intersection of South Street and Carnarvon Road will be temporarily closed.

Detours will be in place via Garfield Road West, Grange Avenue and Townson Road.

We have included a map to show the detours that will be in place and the location of the work.

How will the work affect you?

There will be some noise associated with this work. We will make every effort to minimise noise by carrying out the noisiest work early in the shifts before 11pm.

Background

When the Schofields Road upgrade and extension to Richmond Road is complete it will form a tree lined transit boulevard linking the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres and helping to meet the future transport needs of the North West Priority Land Release Area. Transit boulevards connect pedestrians, cyclists, public transport and vehicles with the surrounding urban land use and are tree lined to set them apart from other roads.

Schofields Road is currently a two-lane, rural road linking Windsor Road at Rouse Hill to Railway Terrace at Schofields. It forms a T-junction with Railway Terrace at its western end.

When the upgrade is completed, Schofields Road would cross the Blacktown-Richmond rail line via an underpass and continue via South Street to link up to Richmond Road at Marsden Park.

Schofields Road is part of an enormous program of NSW Government roadwork that is being planned and delivered in the North West Priority Land Release Area to support new residential and industrial centres in the area, which will see more than 70,000 new homes built in the next 20 years.

Schofields Road is being upgraded in three stages:

  • Stage 1 is between Windsor Road and Tallawong Road and was completed in June 2014
  • Stage 2 is between Tallawong Road and Veron Road and is being built
  • Stage 3 is between Veron Road and Richmond Road and is being built.

Benefits

The key benefits to the community include:

  • A direct local link between Windsor Road and Richmond Road
  • An east-west connection between the Rouse Hill Regional Centre, the proposed Sydney Metro Northwest (previously known as the North West Rail Link), the proposed new Schofields town centre, Schofields Railway Station and the proposed Marsden Park industrial, commercial and residential areas
  • An extra crossing of the Blacktown to Richmond railway line
  • Improved capacity along Schofields Road, catering for higher traffic volumes
  • 10 new intersections with traffic lights between Windsor Road and Richmond Road to improve accessibility for the North West Priority Land Release Area
  • Reduced travel times
  • Improved road safety
  • Improved access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians through off-road shared paths
  • Bus priority at key intersections
