The Northern Road and Bringelly Road Interchange

The Australian and NSW governments are planning to upgrade The Northern Road as part of the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan (WSIP), a 10 year, $3.6 billion road investment program.

The Plan will deliver new and upgraded roads to support integrated transport in the region and capitalise on the economic benefits from developing a western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. It would also improve safety, increase road capacity and reduce congestion and travel times in the future.

As part of the Plan, Roads and Maritime Services is planning a new intersection at The Northern Road and Bringelly Road, Bringelly.

Updates and announcements

The Northern Road and Bringelly Road Interchange will now be built as part of The Northern Road Upgrade, Peter Brock Drive to Mersey Road. The concept design and Review of Environmental Factors (REF) was placed on public display for feedback in November and December 2015.

A submissions report (PDF, 9.5Mb) summarising feedback received during the consultation period and the responses from Roads and Maritime is now available.

Some design improvements to the shared pedestrian and cycle path have been made since the display of the concept design in November 2015. These changes are outlined in the Letter to Residents (PDF, 389Kb).

Roads and Maritime Services is developing a proposal to upgrade the intersection of The Northern Road and Bringelly Road, Bringelly to a grade separated interchange (underpass). As part of the proposal, Bringelly Road would continue on its existing alignment and The Northern Road would be diverted from its current route, about 300 metres to the east of the existing intersection. The realigned The Northern Road would travel under Bringelly Road.

The existing The Northern Road alignment, between Thames Road and Robinson Road, would remain to provide local access to the Bringelly Village shops, Bringelly Public School and private properties.

Roads and Maritime previously designed this intersection to be upgraded with new traffic lights, extra lanes and pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and to provide for a grade separated interchange in the future when needed.

With the Australian Government announcement of the planned western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek in April 2014, it was identified that a grade separated interchange (underpass) would be needed earlier to help manage increased traffic volumes.

The benefits include:

  • Increased traffic capacity on The Northern Road and Bringelly Road for future growth and development in surrounding areas
  • Opportunities for improved public transport
  • Improved traffic flow for motorists by separating road users on The Northern Road and Bringelly Road
  • Less visual impact than a raised overpass
  • Improving road safety for all road users by:
    • Providing wide central medians to separate opposing traffic flows
    • Improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists through a shared path and increasing connectivity for pedestrians by providing new footpaths
    • Improving turning movements for heavy vehicles, particularly from Greendale Road onto The Northern Road.

Key features

The key features of the upgrade include:

  • An interchange (underpass) to separate vehicles on The Northern Road and Bringelly Road to allow for better traffic flow, with The Northern Road running under Bringelly Road. The underpass would allow for free flowing traffic on The Northern Road with no need for stopping
  • Widening The Northern Road and Bringelly Road from two to four lanes with a wide central median to allow for six lanes in the future
  • Installing new on and off ramps between Bringelly Road and The Northern Road, and turning lanes and traffic lights with pedestrian crossings on Bringelly Road
  • A new connection from Robinson Road to The Northern Road on a new section of Belmore Road
  • An off-road shared path for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Changes to access for some properties along The Northern Road, Bringelly Road and Robinson Road.

What happens next?

Construction of the new interchange (underpass) is expected to start in early 2017. The interchange (underpass) will be delivered as part of The Northern Road Upgrade between Peter Brock Drive, Oran Park and Mersey Road, Bringelly. It is anticipated the new underpass would be open to traffic by the end of 2019.

We will keep the community updated as the proposal progresses.
