Project background

The Cobb and Silver City Highways are located in the Far West of NSW and have been identified as important freight corridors for NSW.

The Silver City Highway is a 683 kilometre-long Highway that connects Buronga, on the Victorian border with the Queensland border via Broken Hill and Tibooburra.

The Cobb Highway runs from Moama, on the Victorian border, to the Barrier Highway, near Wilcannia, via Ivanhoe and Hay and is 571 kilometres long.

The program of work will upgrade and seal around 76 kilometres of previously unsealed road, increasing access for freight and motorists and ensuring the highways are safer and less impacted by wet weather.

The NSW Government is providing $30 million in funding for upgrading the Silver City Highway and $30 million for the Cobb Highway through the Restart NSW, Western NSW Freight Productivity Program and state maintenance funding.

Funding has been allocated to seal all remaining unsealed sections of the Silver City Highway. The funding will be released following a detailed project assurance process.

The first projects to commence with the next round of funding would be a new bridge and approaches over Packsaddle Creek (Silver City Highway) and sealing at Slamannon (Cobb Highway).

A Registration of Interest (ROI) was advertised to the private industry in December 2017 and closes February 2018. Results of the ROI will show which companies would be interested in tendering for these projects.

  • Over 76 kilometres of road rebuilding, sealing and drainage work
