Project background

The Cobb and Silver City Highways are located in the Far West of NSW and have been identified as important freight corridors for NSW.

The Silver City Highway is a 683 kilometre-long Highway that connects Buronga, on the Victorian border with the Queensland border via Broken Hill and Tibooburra.

The Cobb Highway runs from Moama, on the Victorian border, to the Barrier Highway, near Wilcannia, via Ivanhoe and Hay and is 571 kilometres long.

The program of work will upgrade and seal around 73 kilometres of previously unsealed road, increasing access for freight and motorists and ensuring the highways are safer and less impacted by wet weather.

The NSW Government is providing $30 million in funding for upgrading the Silver City Highway and $30 million for the Cobb Highway through the Restart NSW, Western NSW Freight Productivity Program and state maintenance funding.

Work on the upgrades started in 2015 and all projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Project overview

The package of work includes:

  • 73 kilometres of road rebuilding, sealing and drainage work
  • Flood immunity planning at Packsaddle Creek
  • Construction of a 1.5 kilometre airstrip at Shannon’s Creek, to be used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Projects underway

Eurella Initial Seal

Initial sealing work at Eurella on the Cobb Highway, 30 kilometres north of Ivanhoe, is being delivered by Central Darling Shire Council on behalf of Roads and Maritime.

The project will see ten kilometres of road rebuilding and sealing, with drainage improvements carried out to provide flood immunity and reduce the occurrences of road closures due to wet weather.

This project began in February 2016 and is expected to be completed by October 2017.

Eight Mile Initial Seal

The project involves sealing 7.2 kilometres of the Silver City Highway, 87 kilometres north of Broken Hill.

The sealing work will provide a smoother surface for motorists and will ensure the road is more durable in times of wet weather.
