Gwydir Highway connection
The northern section of the bypass is now completed. This section runs from the Gwydir Highway, over the new bridge over the Mehi River and the road to the north. This section was opened to traffic on Monday 13 December 2010.
The southern section of the bypass, yet to be constructed, consists of a road south of the Gwydir Highway to Bullus Drive. Construction of the southern section to Bullus Drive has been delayed due to issues associated with land contamination between Gosport Street and the railway line.
While these issues are being resolved, Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) has built the Gwydir Highway connection. This connection allows vehicles to use the northern section of the bypass (bypassing the town centre) and travel along the Gwydir Highway (Alice Street) to reconnect to the existing Newell Highway (Frome Street).
To allow for the connection, upgrade work along Alice Street was undertaken between Morton and Frome streets. These works strengthened the Alice Street pavement and provided additional pedestrian facilities.
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) was required under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act (1979) to undertake an environmental assessment of the Gwydir Highway connection. This assessment focuses on the key issues identified by the Department of Planning, and other agencies, as important to evaluate this proposal. These issues include potential social, economic and environmental impacts.
The environmental assessment of the Gwydir Highway connection was placed on public display for a period of 30 days from 14 October to 16 November 2009. The Department of Planning received 15 submissions during the display period.
Roads and Maritime Services (formerly Roads and Traffic Authority) prepared a submissions report to summarise and address the issues raised in the 15 submissions received during the display period. To view the submissions report, see the 'Files' list below.
The NSW Department of Planning has approved the Gwydir Highway connection and has updated the conditions of approval for the project.
