Road & Fleet Services held its first Subcontractor Safety Forum at Homebush on 24 November 2011. The objective was for RFS staff to engage with subcontractors in a face-to-face setting with a view to raising the level of safety culture and awareness. This will ultimately help RFS to provide an injury-free workplace.
Around 80 people attended, representing 40 companies that subcontract to RFS in the Sydney region, providing traffic control, traffic signal, minor construction and vegetation control services.
Feedback was extremely positive. Ninety-six per cent rated the forum as excellent or very good. The highest rated response from the evaluation questionnaire was ‘I will be able to use what I have learnt in my day-to-day duties’.
Sparke Helmore lawyer, Carlie Holt gave a presentation Work Health and Safety legal requirements and expectations. This presentation received the highest acclaim and many participants requested a copy.
The Cost of Accidents DVD presentation was considered “very confronting” but “great” and the Q&A session was rated as “highly informative”. Andrew Nesbitt (RFS Safety Manager) gave a presentation on Subcontractor and WHS system requirements was well received as was GGM Greg Evans’s Safety Journey presentation.
Thanks to the success of this forum, further events are being planned for other regions.
Kiosks provided information, including handouts, on transport, chain of responsibility, working safely near mobile plant, traffic management and plant risk assessment.
