What has happened?
In September 2011, Roads and Maritime invited residents to have their say about options to improve road safety and pedestrian amenity on Fullers Road, Chatswood.
The community showed great interest and concern, with 71 responses. The majority of respondents indicated their main concern was with speeding vehicles and the impact on the safety of both motorists and pedestrians using Fullers Road.
On Tuesday 15 November 2011, Willoughby City Council called a community meeting to facilitate further discussion on how to improve Fullers Road. As well as representatives from council and Roads and Maritime, approximately 100 residents attended this meeting. The draft meeting notes and the presentation by Roads and Maritime are available on the project documents page.
Roads and Maritime agreed to seek comments not only from the residents of Fullers Road, but also from the wider community. Consultation with the wider community was undertaken in November 2011.
Based on comments from the community, Willoughby City Council and the Member for Willoughby, The Honourable Gladys Berejiklian, in April 2012 produced a proposal (PDF, 3.18MB) to address speed and safety concerns. The community was invited to comment on the proposal. Issues arising from this consultation have been considered in the community issues report (PDF, 964KB).
Following consideration of community comment, a six month trial of the new line marking scheme required to implement the proposal was proposed to start in January 2013. Due to further concerns raised by the community, the trial was suspended in February 2013.
What happens next?
The assessment revealed that the proposal would be effective in improving safety along Fullers Road. The review recommended the addition of a right turn lane at Edgar Street.
Roads and Maritime will also resurface Fullers Road between Millwood Avenue and Jenkins Street to reduce the risk of crashes.
The resurfacing of Fullers Road provides Roads and Maritime with an opportunity to install the proposed line marking scheme on Fullers Road between James Street and Sylvia Street.
