Tom Ugly's Bridge
Tom Ugly's Bridge is a key link between Sutherland Shire and the Sydney metropolitan area, crossing the Georges River between Sylvania and Blakehurst.
The repainting and associated repairs to the bridge deck and the structural steel on both the north and southbound sections of Tom Ugly's Bridge are an essential and ongoing part of a maintenance program to preserve the bridge and reduce future maintenance disruptions. There are three phases of this work:
- Phase 1 – Replacing the bridge expansion joints (northbound).
- Phase 2 – Deck repairs and resurfacing (northbound).
- Phase 3 – Repaint and refurbishment (north and southbound).
Phases 1 and 2 are complete.
Repainting of the northbound bridge was completed in April 2009 and the southbound bridge in September 2011.
Refurbishment work on the southbound bridge is continuing. Bearings on two of the eight bridge piers were replaced in January 2012. Further work to replace bearings is planned to start in mid 2013.
Roads and Maritime Services will continue to update key stakeholders and local residents on the progress of the maintenance work.
