Tow truck assessments

It is the responsibility of the registered operator of a Tow Truck fitted with a partial lift and tow device (commonly referred to as a cradle) to ensure the lift capacity determined by Roads and Maritime Services is marked on the equipment.

The Road Rules 2014 Clause 294-3 requires Roads and Maritime to determine the lifting capacity of a lift and tow device fitted to a Tow Truck. We do this by issuing your vehicle a Tow Truck Assessment.

Note: Vehicle Inspector Bulletin No 51 Inspection of a vehicle intended to be operated as a (lift and tow) tow truck for establishing registration includes information on how to get a Tow Truck Assessment for these vehicles.

If your Tow Truck is not fitted with a partial lift and tow device, you do not need a Tow Truck Assessment.
