How do I open an E-Toll short term tag account?
You can open your account in person at any motor registry. Just hand your completed application form to one of the motor registry staff. For any enquiries call 131 865.
How long does it take to get a tag?
E-Toll short-term tags are issued immediately over the counter.
How much does it cost to open a short term tag account?
The E-Toll short term tag has a weekly fee of $5. This is charged to your credit card when you open your account and in advance for every week (or part thereof) you have the tag. Toll fees are charged to your credit card at the end of each weekly period. You do not need to pay a deposit for this tag.
Are there any account keeping fees for the short term tag account?
There are no account keeping fees associated with the short term tag account. If you request items that are not standard fees the following fees will apply:
- Monthly E-Toll statement (for non ABN customers) if requested monthly by post - $2.20 per month.
- Reprint of an E-Toll statement or tax invoices - $5.50 per reprint.
- Email statements are made available free of charge.
Are there any other fees associated with the short term tag account?
Yes, the following fees apply:
- Credit card dishonour fee $1.00 per instance
- Reconnection fee* $11.00
- Non-return tag fee* $40.00
* Applies to an account that has had three consecutive credit card dishonour fees and must be paid for the account to be reconnected.
** If the account is not reconnected within 21 days, and the tag has not been returned to the registry it was collected from, a non-return tag fee is applied to the account.
What are the payment options for the short term tag?
You can pay by credit card - MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Diners Club.
How often will my credit card be billed?
You will be billed once per week – for your weekly fee in advance and any tolls you incurred in the previous week. If you accumulate $40 or more on your tag account during a weekly period a separate payment will be deducted. Any trips recorded for the remainder of the week will then be charged in conjunction with the next weekly fee.
Can I change from a short term user to a frequent or an infrequent user?
You can not currently change your account from a short term user to a frequent or infrequent user. However, you can open a new account at any time.
How many short term tags can I have?
There is no limit on the number of short term tags you can have, however you will need to pay a weekly fee for each tag. Also, only one number plate can be linked to each short term tag.
On which roads can E-Toll tags be used?
E-Toll tags are accepted on all toll roads in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
Where can I find my E-Toll account number?
Your E-Toll account number is printed in the top right corner of your E-Toll account statements and on your welcome letter received when you opened the account.
What is a phone password?
A phone password is a security measure used to verify your identity before any information is provided to you or any instructions are accepted from you in relation to your E-Toll account. This helps ensure only you, or your authorised representatives (up to two), can access and manage your E-Toll account details over the phone.

How do I update my short term tag account details?
You can update your short term tag account details:
- In person: If you are the primary contact person on the account, you can change details on your account in person at any of the dedicated E-Toll motor registries. You will be required to present proof of identity.
- By phone: Call 131 865 and a customer service officer will update your details or organise for any relevant forms to be faxed or posted.
How do I authorise another person to have access to my short term tag account?
You can authorise another person to have access to your short term tag account by completing the relevant form available at any motor registry.
Will I get regular account statements?
Yes, all E-Toll customers receive regular account statements via email, depending on whether monthly or quarterly was selected on the E-Toll application form. Alternatively, you can choose to receive these via post for $2.20 per month.
What information will be included on my statements?
Each statement will show your itemised toll use for each of short term tags including the cost, date, time and location. The statement also shows the balances of your account at the beginning and end of the statement period, any fees (including the weekly fee) and any manual adjustments.
How do I attach the tag to my vehicle?
When you receive your tag/s you will also receive an instruction sheet and supplies to attach your tag to your vehicle. You can also download the instructions.
Please note: If your vehicle is fitted with metallic windscreens or a rain sensor, attach your tag within the area usually indicated with a series of small dots or shading. Refer to your vehicle handbook or car manufacturer for further information.
How do I remove the tag bracket from my vehicle?
E-Toll brackets are designed for single use only and should only be removed when absolutely necessary. To help remove a bracket, use a warm, damp cloth around the edges of the bracket to help moisten the adhesive.
What is my tag number?
Your E-Toll tag number is printed on the tag itself. It is the seven digit number immediately to the left of the 5888, (ignore the zeros).
Can I use my short term tag in more than one vehicle?
A short term tag can only be used in the vehicle that was nominated on the account application form when setting up the tag.
