Tenders open for major upgrade of Alfords Point Road

Wednesday 30 September 2015

Member for Miranda, Eleni Petinos MP, today welcomed the opening of tenders for the major upgrade of Alfords Point Road at Illawong between Brushwood Drive and the Georges River announced on Monday 28 September 2015.

The Alfords Point Road Southern Approach to Alfords Point Bridge will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction to improve traffic flow between Brushwood Drive.

“Road users in the Sutherland Shire are set to benefit immensely from this upgrade, which will improve travel times and reduce congestion during peak periods,” Ms Petinos said.

“The project will widen Alfords Point Road, a key road in southern Sydney, providing access across the Georges River for motorists, commuters, cyclists and freight vehicles,” Ms Petinos said.

“The NSW Government has allocated significant funding from the $300 million Gateway to the South project to carry out this work, which will reduce congestion and improve delays,” Ms Petinos said.

Work will include the installation of a central barrier dividing the northbound and southbound carriageways to improve safety, new road surfacing and the installation of an improved drainage system.

The northbound bus bay will be relocated on Alfords Point Road on ramp near Eucalyptus Street, around 100 metres to the south. Pedestrian safety will be improved with a new shared path installed on the eastern side of Alfords Point Road and breakdown bay along the southbound carriageway located mid-way between the Georges River and Brushwood Drive.

A truck inspection area on the southbound carriageway will be relocated to beneath Old Illawarra Road Bridge, around 900 metres south of Brushwood Drive.

Existing noise walls will be adjusted and other noise treatments investigated.

“This important work follows the duplication of Alfords Point Bridge completed in 2008 and the Alfords Point Bridge Northern Approach opened to traffic in late 2011,” Ms Petinos said.

Tenders are expected to be awarded before the end of this year, with work expected to start on the upgrade in the first half of next year.
