Newell Highway overtaking lanes for Jerilderie
7 November 2019
Member for Albury Justin Clancy has announced that road users are set to benefit from new north and southbound overtaking lanes on the Newell Highway at Bundure, north of Jerilderie, with work kicking off next week.
Mr. Clancy said the project was part of the NSW Government's $500 million commitment to improve safety, reduce travel times and improve freight productivity along the Newell Highway.
"We are powering ahead with our commitment to deliver about 30 new overtaking lanes on the Newell Highway in the next four years saving road users about 25 minutes of travel time along the highway’s length," Mr. Clancy said.
“The highway travels through a number of towns, including Jerilderie, with road users stopping for something to eat or to stay the night, helping support local economies.
“Bundure is the fifth Newell Highway location to be upgraded with new overtaking lanes since the program launched in March 2019.”
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the Bundure overtaking lanes were the first set to be delivered at the southern end of the Newell Highway.
“These lanes are crucial for both safety and efficiency and will make travelling on the Newell – the freight backbone of the State – faster, safer and more reliable,” Mr. Toole said.
“We already have four projects underway between Gilgandra and Forbes, with two more set to start in the coming months at Telescope and Peak Hill.”
Work will commence from Monday 11 November and include widening of the road and installation of rumble strips for improved safety.
Work will be carried out from 7am to 6pm weekdays and 7am to 5pm Saturdays, and is expected to be completed by April 2020.
Traffic control measures and partial road closures will be in place where necessary to keep workers and motorists safe.
Reduced speed limits will apply at all times throughout the project. Road users are advised to drive to the conditions and to follow the direction of traffic control and all signs.
