Sydney Harbour Bridge lane upgrades in March

Roads Minister Duncan Gay has announced overnight repair work will be carried out on the southern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge over the next few days.

Mr Gay said resurfacing work on the southern sections of lanes 1 to 8 will be carried out one lane at a time from Friday 15 to Tuesday 26 March between 10pm and 6am.

“Due to heavy rain when major work was carried out last January, we’ve got some more resurfacing and waterproofing to do,” Mr Gay said.

“The reinstatement of waterproofing membrane was not possible in winter and spring due to the cooler temperatures and we are taking this opportunity while conditions are in our favour,” he said.

“While conditions are right and traffic volumes are at their lowest at night, we’ll also take the opportunity to re-surface bus lanes 7 and 8 after all the recent heavy rain.

“This essential night work on the southern lanes is getting us ready for a major upgrade to the Bridge’s Southern Toll Plaza.

“The upgrade of the Southern Toll Plaza, which includes removing the old toll booths and realigning lanes will make it a smoother, simpler ride to the city.

“Next month, we will upgrade two sign gantries on the Bradfield Highway, just south of the High Street overpass and the Cahill Expressway just north of the existing Kirribilli toll booths in preparation for the new tolling equipment.

“Work to remove the old toll booths will start in September, when we’ll have minor traffic diversions in place,” Mr Gay said.

“The majority of this work will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption to the travelling public.

“There’s been ongoing consultation with local communities, councils and businesses on the project and we will continue to ensure they are notified at every stage of work.

“We thank motorists and residents for their patience as we get on with simplifying travel on this much loved Sydney icon,” Mr Gay said.
