Statement on Barry O'Farrell
25 November 2014
I spent almost 20 years in Parliament with Barry O’Farrell and I want to thank him for his service to the community.
Mr O’Farrell’s departure from politics is a great loss for NSW.
He was a great leader and I have no doubt that history will remember him well.
Infrastructure delivery takes time to ensure the planning, consultation and financing is in place before we can build.
The work was quietly and resolutely steaming ahead, under Mr O’Farrell, which is something the community rarely got to see.
The cranes and road work the people of NSW see around them now are a result of his vision for NSW and his belief the state deserved so much better than it got for 16 years.
His legacy includes starting major infrastructure like WestConnex and delivering Western Sydney growth roads like Erskine Park Link Road.
As a big believer in the future of Western Sydney he took the position of Minister for Western Sydney and personally oversaw historic levels of investment in the region.
He made sure the Princes and Pacific Highways were upgraded and regional NSW was also seeing record investment.
Most of these major projects included the support of the Federal Government which he negotiated on behalf of our state.
The roads package for Badgery’s Creek Airport is another win for NSW secured by Mr O’Farrell.
As one of the Nationals leaders, I can say we always thought of him as a friend.
He once joked that when he left public life he would get rid of his mobile phone, I know I speak on behalf of many in the community when I say I hope we have not reached that stage yet.
I wish he, Rosemary, Will and Tom a wonderful next chapter, I am sure he will conduct himself with integrity and dedication in whatever he chooses next.
