Maintenance work on Morpeth Bridge complete
25 October 2017
The essential maintenance project on the state heritage listed Morpeth Bridge, across the Hunter River at Morpeth, is now complete for the benefit of Maitland motorists.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said the NSW Government provided $2.9 million for work to maintain the strength and capacity of the historic bridge.
“Roads and Maritime Services started work during the middle of 2016, which involved replacing most of the timber truss elements on the bridge,” Mr MacDonald said.
“Work on the bridge was delicate as the bridge is listed on the state heritage register and is assessed as being nationally significant, primarily on the basis of its technical and historical characteristics.
“With stage one maintenance work now complete, stage two work to repaint the bridge will start next year.”
Roads and Maritime thanks the community for their patience with the ongoing bridge and lane closures required while this work was carried out.
The community will be kept informed about changed traffic conditions before work to paint the bridge starts.
