Berry to Bomaderry upgrade powering ahead

7 September 2020

The Berry to Bomaderry section of the Princes Highway Upgrade is gaining speed with Pestells Lane overpass and Devitts Lane underpass nearing completion and the first traffic switch to newly built lanes expected within weeks.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the $400 million Berry to Bomaderry Princes Highway Upgrade was the final piece of more than 30 kilometres of highway upgraded between Gerringong and Bomaderry to improve journeys along the South Coast.

"This is part of the NSW Government's $100 billion infrastructure pipeline which is keeping the economy moving and delivering the infrastructure we need now and for the future," Mr Toole said.

"Work on this 10.5 kilometre section of highway alone has supported more than 200 jobs and it's just part of the work we are undertaking to upgrade the Princes Highway and transform journeys along the South Coast."

Mr Toole said the Pestells Lane overpass was the first road construction project in the country to use All-Australian weathering steel.

"The overpass incorporates three 100-metre long, 109-tonne girders with steel produced in Port Kembla and fabricated in Newcastle," Mr Toole said.

"Using this weather resistant All-Australian steel is not only supporting local based industries, it will also help reduce ongoing maintenance costs for many years to come."

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward said the first traffic switch to utilise the new lanes along this section of highway between Croziers Road and Ison Lane would take place on Thursday, 17 September.

"The local community has been watching the project steam ahead and it is exciting to see that these new lanes will open to traffic very soon," Mr Ward said.

"This will be followed by the switch to upgraded sections between Wileys Creek and Abernethys Lane, including the opening of the Pestells Lane overpass and Devitts Lane underpass, next month."
