Work progressing well on intersection upgrades between F3 and Newcastle
5 June 2012
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will this week complete work on the first of six intersection upgrades along the main route between the F3 Freeway and Newcastle.
An RMS spokesperson said $10 million was provided to start work on six intersection upgrades this financial year.
“RMS has completed the intersection upgrade at the Newcastle Road and Longworth Avenue roundabout at Wallsend,” the spokesperson said.
“The intersection upgrade included adjusting the existing lanes to provide two continuous lanes from Newcastle Road to Thomas Street.
“Pedestrian crossings on Newcastle Road and Thomas Street have been relocated and traffic lights have been installed at the Newcastle Road entry into the roundabout.
“The traffic lights will be switched on this week and will improve the flow of westbound and northbound traffic using the roundabout.
“Traffic along this route is expected to increase when the Hunter Expressway opens to traffic in late 2013 and these intersection upgrades along the 13 kilometre route will improve traffic flow and road safety.
“Upgrades at the remaining five key intersections are expected to be completed by mid 2013, weather permitting,” the spokesperson said.
RMS thanks motorists for their patience while this important work was carried out.
