Consultation opens for Hamilton South Road upgrades
The community is invited to provide feedback on an environmental assessment which has been completed for proposed road safety upgrades on Stewart Avenue at the Parkway Avenue and Kemp Street intersections at Hamilton South.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said the NSW Government has allocated $800,000 this financial year for safety improvements which aim to reduce the risk of crashes at the Stewart Avenue intersections with Parkway Avenue and Kemp Street.
“The proposal involves providing a 30 metre right turn lane on Parkway Avenue for westbound motorists turning onto Stewart Avenue and adjusting the traffic lights to provide a right turn phase,” Mr MacDonald said.
“A raised concrete median will be installed on Kemp Street to stop right turn movements into and out of the eastern side of Kemp Street which will reduce the risk of crashes by removing conflicting traffic movements.
“The changes mean motorists will no longer be able to drive straight across the four lanes of Stewart Avenue from the western side of Kemp Street into the eastern side of Kemp Street.”
Mr MacDonald said an environmental assessment has been carried out, in consultation with a range of stakeholders including technical specialists to identify potential impacts of the proposal and activities to reduce them.
“The environmental assessment also considered feedback received on the proposal during the March 2017 public display.
“Investigations found the proposal is unlikely to have a significant impact on the environment with a range of environmental mitigation and management measures put in place,” Mr MacDonald said.
“Comments from stakeholders and the community are invited on the review of environmental factors by Friday 13 October 2017 and the feedback received will be used to finalise the proposal.
“A copy of the review of environmental factors and the community consultation report for the March 2017 public display is available on the Roads and Maritime website at http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/projects/hunter/stewart-parkway-kemp/index.html or at Newcastle City Council Administration Centre at 282 King Street, Newcastle.”
