Motorists reminded to slow down in new 50Km/h zones at Redfern and Alexandria
6 OCTOBER 2017
Motorists will see changes to speed limits around Redfern and Alexandria from next Friday with new 50 km/h speed limits being introduced to improve driver and pedestrian safety.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government and the City of Sydney have introduced the new speed limits to ensure pedestrians, including children and the elderly, are able to move around safely in the local area.
“Roads and Maritime Services partners with NSW councils to increase driver and pedestrian safety by lowering urban road speed limits to 50km/h in areas with high crash rates,” the spokesperson said.
“The new 50 km/h speed limits will be in effect from Friday 13 October and motorists are reminded to look out for the new signs at Redfern and Alexandria and drive at the lower speed to increase safety.”
The new speed limits will be in place on Gibbons and Wyndham streets between Regent Street and Henderson Road at Redfern, Regent Street and Botany Road between Cleveland Street and Henderson Road at Redfern, Henderson Road between Botany and Mitchell roads at Alexandria as well as Fountain Street between Mitchell Road and McEvoy Street at Alexandria.
“Connecting major roads in Redfern and Alexandria have an existing speed limit of 50 km/h so reduced speed on these local streets will ensure a safer and more consistent journey for motorists,” the spokesperson said.
“This reduction in speed aims to reduce both the severity and likelihood of crashes on these roads.
“Motorists are reminded the 50km/h speed limit on sign-posted roads is legally enforceable and normal police enforcement procedures apply.”
