Plan ahead of night work on M1 Princes Motorway and Picton Road

A small army of workers is about to descend on two of the Illawarra’s busiest roads to carry out routine maintenance work to improve safety for motorists.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government is funding the work as part of its $1.5 billion maintenance program which aims to improve the state’s 18,028 kilometre road network.
“Work will be carried out on Sunday 6 and Sunday 20 May on the M1 Princes Motorway and Picton Road between 8pm and 4am, with Picton Road closed to eastbound traffic from 7.30pm.
“Work will take place at night to minimise disruption to the community, as it will require the closure of the M1 Motorway and Picton Road in both directions.
“This maintenance work is scheduled six times a year to improve safety for the thousands of motorists who travel on these roads each day.
“This package of work will involve clearing vegetation, cleaning gutters and drains to improve stormwater runoff, road resurfacing, line marking and maintenance of safety ramps.”
The spokesperson said geotechnical investigations will also be carried out as part of the planning for the upgrade of the M1 between Picton Road and Bulli Tops improvement project.
“So work can be completed as safely and efficiently as possible, the M1 will be closed between Bulli Tops and Memorial Drive while Picton Road will be closed between the M1 and Wilton Road.
“Detours will be in place via Memorial Drive, Bulli Pass and Appin Road and motorists are advised to plan their journey and allow extra travel time.”
If the work is unable to take place due to poor weather it will be rescheduled for Sunday 17 June. The next closure of the M1 Motorway and Picton Road for maintenance work is planned for August this year.
