Have your say on busy Ashfield intersection upgrade
14 September 2018
Road users in Ashfield are invited to have their say on proposed improvements to the busy intersection of Georges River Road and Milton Street.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government is funding the upgrade as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Point Program, which aims to reduce congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s busiest road corridors.
“This is a heavily congested intersection in Ashfield, with more than 2700 vehicles moving through the intersection during the weekday morning and afternoon peaks,” the spokesperson said.
“Roads and Maritime has proposed changes to help reduce queuing and ease congestion which will allow more vehicles to travel through the intersection during each traffic light phase.
“Road users and the community have an opportunity to provide feedback on the plans by 9 October, and I encourage everyone who uses this intersection or lives nearby to have their say.”
The improvements include an additional right turn lane on Milton Street for motorists turning into Georges River Road, and the widening of the eastern side of Milton Street to provide a dedicated through lane for southbound motorists.
“Roads and Maritime also plans to install a pedestrian crossing on the south side of the intersection and restrict right turns from Milton Street into and out of nearby Blackwood Avenue,” the spokesperson said.
“The upgrade will re-align the south-west corner of the intersection and the shared path on the eastern side of Milton Street to provide safer access for service vehicles and extend parking restrictions.
“Other work includes relocating existing sandstone kerb, removing some trees on Milton Street to accommodate the road widening, and modifying existing street lighting, utilities, line marking, signal infrastructure and sign posting to suit the new intersection layout.”
