Crews dig deep for Warringah Road underpass

Work is progressing well on the Warringah Road underpass as part of the Northern Beaches Hospital road upgrade, with around 50 per cent of the underpass now excavated.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Sydney John Hardwick said more than 60,000 cubic tonnes of soil, rock and other material has been removed since major work started on the underpass in October last year.
“Building the underpass is a challenging task but once complete, it will provide motorists with improved traffic flow and safety for years to come,” Mr Hardwick said.
“Crews have been working hard across the past few months to excavate large amounts of soil and rock to form the new underpass which will open to traffic in 2020.
“The excavation of soil and rock from under the Hilmer Street bridge is a major milestone for the upgrade.”
Mr Hardwick said work is continuing on the remainder of the 1.3 kilometre long underpass, with more than 15 excavators working hard to carve out the new roadway.
“All spoil excavated from the underpass is carefully transported to the former Belrose landfill site to be used for the Bare Creek Mountain Bike Park, with up to 10 trucks completing 90 round trips each day,” Mr Hardwick said.
“Work on the underpass will continue to be carried out in stages to minimise the impact on motorists.”
Mr Hardwick said work on the new underpass bridges at Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway are continuing to take shape.
“Like the work carried out on the Forest Way underpass bridge, crews have been on site to stitch together the two sections of the Wakehurst Parkway underpass bridge,” Mr Hardwick said.
“Both bridges are expected to open to traffic in the coming months, weather permitting.
“The community and motorists are thanked for their continued patience and will continue to be kept updated.”
