Cameras installed for safer traffic management at Bolivia Hill
12 August 2019
CCTV cameras are now in place on the New England Highway at Bolivia Hill to help minimise delays for motorists and improve the safety of traffic controllers.
Transport for NSW Regional Director Northern Anna Andrews said the cameras have been installed by the NSW Government to monitor vehicle movements and queuing at the traffic lights to reduce delays as much as possible.
"A 2.6 kilometre section of the highway has been reduced to one lane, 24 hours per day seven days per week, with traffic lights in operation at the top and bottom of Bolivia Hill," Ms Andrews said.
"Cameras will ensure efficient operation of the lights and also improve safety for traffic controllers and workers, after a number of vehicles ignored the lights and the directions of traffic control.
"These motorists are putting themselves and other road users in danger, as this section of road has no opportunities for vehicles to overtake or pass.
"NSW Police will be providing additional enforcement, and will use the CCTV to identify offenders."
Ms Andrews said Transport for NSW is delivering the upgrade along the two-kilometre stretch of road, about halfway between Tenterfield and Glen Innes.
"The project involves building more than two kilometres of new road, a new 320-metre-long bridge, wider lanes in each direction and widened road shoulders to improve safety," Ms Andrews said.
"The $80 million project is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments."
Ms Andrews said motorists must obey the traffic lights at all times as there is no ability to see oncoming traffic.
"Motorists are urged to be patient and allow extra travel time, and are reminded the wait for the lights to change is typically no more than 10 minutes," Ms Andrews said.
Transport for NSW thanks the community and heavy vehicle operators for their patience while this essential work is carried out.
