Plans progress for proposed M5 Motorway improvements
12 December 2019
The community is invited to have their say on plans to upgrade westbound lanes along the M5 Motorway between Moorebank Avenue and Hume Highway.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Sydney John Hardwick said the NSW Government is investigating upgrade options to ensure motorists can safely enter and exit the motorway.
“Motorists travelling through Moorebank towards Liverpool are experiencing congestion between Moorebank Avenue and Hume Highway during the afternoon peak,” Mr Hardwick said.
“This congestion is caused by traffic trying to enter and exit the M5 Motorway along a short stretch of road."
“Transport for NSW has now identified a recommended design which would ease congestion and improve the efficiency of the surrounding road network.”
Mr Hardwick said the project would involve building a new two lane bridge across the Georges River and railway lines to provide easier access to Hume Highway exit.
“Work would also involve changing the existing Moorebank Avenue westbound entry and exits ramps to improve efficiency at the interchange,” Mr Hardwick said.
“The new underpass of Moorebank Avenue would also be built to connect with the proposed new bridge."
“By removing this key pinch point, motorists would experience smoother and safer journeys on this section of the M5 Motorway and Moorebank Avenue.”
Mr Hardwick said the upgrade would also support expected growth throughout Liverpool and Moorebank, including from the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal.
“In the next 10 to 20 years, traffic and freight movements will increase which is why the NSW Government is working hard to address this expected growth now,” Mr Hardwick said.
The community is invited to attend drop-in sessions to speak with the project team, provide feedback and learn more about the proposal.
Feedback on the recommended design is invited until Friday 21 February 2020 and will be considered when finalising the design.
