New lane eases congestion at busy Sydenham intersection
17 February 2020
Motorists travelling through Sydenham will have smoother journeys with intersection upgrades now open to traffic at the Princes Highway and Railway Road.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the project included installing a new right turn lane on Railway Road.
“During peak times, more than 700 vehicles an hour try to turn from Railway Road onto the Princes Highway, which had been causing frustrating delays of more than four minutes and long traffic queues on the two lanes available,” the spokesperson said.
“Work included widening Railway Road, to allow space for a second dedicated right turn lane for traffic heading south-west towards the airport, alongside a left turn lane for vehicles travelling north-east towards the city.
“The improvements will help reduce congestion and improve travel times.”
The spokesperson said the pedestrian crossing was also moved to the opposite side of the intersection to reduce waiting times for motorists turning right, and to line up with a new traffic island.
“Work started in April last year and included relocating utilities, new footpaths and road widening,” the spokesperson said.
“Motorists will still see crews on site, with final work including pavement surfacing, landscaping and removal of the site compound continuing.
“Motorists and the community are thanked for their patience while work was carried out.”
