Refunds on past registration payments

We’re providing refunds on some heavy vehicle registration charges paid by primary producers from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2018 inclusive.

If you are eligible for a refund you will receive a letter letting you know how much your total refund will be.

We will then mail you an itemised breakdown with the details about how much refund you will receive per vehicle. We will then mail you a cheque for your full refund amount.

We’re offering this refund because we identified that some customers were entitled to a higher concession than they had received when they initially paid their registration.

Frequently asked questions

  • Primary producers are eligible for a refund on some heavy vehicle registration payments if:

    • you were the registered operator of a heavy vehicle (>4.5 tonnes) with usage code PPG or PPGN and
    • your vehicle registration was established or was due for renewal on or from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2018 inclusive and
    • you paid for the registration.

A primary producer's (PPG or PPGN) vehicle is a vehicle used by a primary producer or rural co-operative principally for:

    • carting primary products or goods used in a primary producer’s business or household
    • carting leaves which the primary producer has gathered and from which eucalyptus or other oil is to be distilled
    • purposes connected with the clearing of land to be used for primary production

These vehicles cannot be used for let or hire.

  • We’re offering this refund because we identified that some customers were entitled to a higher concession than they had received when they initially paid their registration.

We are recalculating the registration charges for those customers, and will refund the remaining discount amount.

  • Roads and Maritime will calculate the refund amounts. Customers will be refunded the difference between the amount they paid and the amount they should have paid over the last three years, had they received their full discount. We will notify customers of their refund amount, then send a cheque for the full amount.

  • Roads and Maritime will contact affected customers by mail from November 2018 to let them know how much their refund will come to.

Customers will then receive a financial breakdown, followed by a cheque for the full refund amount.

  • The letters and cheques will be sent to the address you currently have registered with Roads and Maritime Services. If this address is incorrect you will need to change your address either online or at a service centre, then call 13 22 13 during business hours to provide your new address details.

  • Three years is consistent with the refund provision in the Road Transport Act 2013.

  • For further information about your refund call 13 22 13 during business hours. Please have your driver licence and registration details for the vehicle(s) relating to your enquiry with you.
