Rewarding industry innovators to improve regional roads

Roads and Maritime want to partner with industry to innovate our maintenance program and deliver the benefits to our regional and rural NSW road users.

Initiative winners

After an evaluation process and assessment by a panel of experts in recent months, Roads and Maritime is pleased to announce the five winners of the inaugural Innovation Network initiative, who win the opportunity to trial their innovative maintenance solutions on regional NSW roads:

  • Black Moth Vision Systems will trial their 360 degree vision system for heavy machinery to record road defects and road maintenance issues
  • Lendlease will trial their ‘Push-In’ technology to improve traffic signal reliability and safety
  • Concrete Pavement Recycling, a joint venture of NA Group and RPQ Group, will trial their concrete pavement fracturing technology
  • GHD will trial an Australian-first in-vehicle pavement evaluation application
  • Fulton Hogan will trial their Laser Texture Meter system which provides road profile measurements.

Roads and Maritime is investing $500,000 to bring safer and more efficient maintenance solutions to our roads, with the top five innovations set to be trialled in the coming months as part of the agency’s regional road maintenance program in 2018-19.

The initiative attracted more than 80 submissions, before the top 10 were chosen and invited to present their innovations at a fast paced, interactive ‘pitch day’ to a panel of industry experts, academics and Roads and Maritime safety experts on 19 June 2018.

Roads and Maritime would like to extend a special word of thanks to Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, inventor and Director of UNSW Australia’s Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT), and Carlos Rial, CEO of the Australian Asphalt and Pavement Association for their involvement on the Panel – and to all Panel members who offered their expertise to this agency-first initiative.

We would also like to congratulate the finalists of the Innovation Network initiative, and thank them for their presentations on pitch day as well as their innovations and initial submissions, which were all of an extremely high-calibre:

  • Claycrete Global Pty Ltd, for their innovation, Pavement Asset Value Enhancement (PAVE)
  • Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd, for their innovation, Downer Real-time iBarrier Incident Technology
  • Grace Coring, for their innovation, "Snap Shotting" pavements and sub-grades
  • Marc Hendrickx and Associates Pty Ltd, for their innovation, Infrastructure Inspection using remote Drones
  • Slasher Teck Ltd, for their innovation, Post Slashing Vegetation Management System.

Roads and Maritime is grateful to industry for their overwhelming support and involvement in this initiative. We are looking forward to partnering with experts to bring these innovations to life in the coming months, to ultimately benefit our customers using regional NSW Roads.

Background

Submissions have now closed for the opportunity to have your innovation trialled on Roads and Maritime regional road maintenance projects, as part of our Innovation Network: Innovating regional road maintenance initiative.

We want to partner with industry to innovate our maintenance program and deliver the benefits to our regional and rural NSW road users.

Innovations had to be suitable for trial and ready for operationalisation on our projects. They had to offer efficiency savings for our agency and most importantly, more value for our customers. Innovations could address one or more of the below core areas, including (but not limited to):

  • infrastructure inspections, monitoring or surveying
  • pavements inspections
  • safety
  • resealing
  • communication, skills, resources or knowledge sharing
  • Reducing paperwork, efficiencies with reports, timesheets
  • corridor landscaping maintenance/vegetation clearance.

Roads and Maritime’s Innovation Network: Innovating regional road maintenance is also an exciting opportunity for the ‘Top 10’ finalists to pitch their innovations to an expert panel comprising thought leaders, inventors, academics and leaders in industry: Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology at UNSW and Carlos Rial, CEO of the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association, joins Roads and Maritime maintenance experts as well as Executive Director, Regional and Freight, Roy Wakelin-King on our judging panel.

Roads and Maritime will fund a trial of the winning innovation/s (as selected by our expert Panel) as part of the Roads and Maritime regional road maintenance program in 2018/2019. If successful, we may choose to use one or more of the innovation solutions on an ongoing basis.

Roads and Maritime maintains more than 15,000 kilometres of road and bridge infrastructure in regional NSW including linemarking, pavement repairs, vegetation clearance, litter collection and barrier repairs every year.

The $4.8 billion Government investment in regional NSW offers us a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people living, working and travelling on regional and rural NSW roads.
