(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.11)
Lake Illawarra, Windang
WINDANG BRIDGE REHABILITATION WORKS
25 March 2020 for approximately 8 to 10 weeks
Vessel operators are advised that due to the rehabilitation of the sea bed below and adjacent to the Windang bridge, an exclusion zone pursuant to Section 11(1) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 will be established on the waters of the Windang Channel, Lake Illawarra, in the vicinity of spans of the Windang Bridge closest to the township of Windang from 25 March 2020 for approximately 8 to 10 weeks.
Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, an Exclusion Zone (‘the Zone’) will be established on the waters of the Windang Channel, Lake Illawarra and in the vicinity of spans of the Windang Bridge closest to the township of Windang.
The zone will be activated and marked by the placement of local waters buoys and signage, which may vary to meet the requirements of the works.
Barges, divers and machinery, such as excavators, will be active in the zone and general area of the Windang township side of the Channel and bridge.
The zone will be established to provide for essential in and over water works associated with the rehabilitation of the sea bed below Windang bridge and will apply 24 hours a day between the above dates.
All vessel operators and persons using the waters should keep a proper lookout, comply with local buoyage and signage, and exercise extreme caution when in the vicinity of the works.
Transport for NSW advises that in relation to the zone:
- Persons within the vicinity of the Area must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the construction of bridge works or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
- No unauthorised vessels are permitted to enter the Zone and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s11(4) - Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)
