Navigation Restriction - Murray River, Swan Hill - Swan Hill Bridge works
(Marine Safety Act 1998 s.12)
Murray River, Swan Hill
SWAN HILL BRIDGE WORKS
Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020
Vessel operators are advised that due to bridge works, a Special Event pursuant to Section 12(2) of the Marine Safety Act 1998 has been declared on the Murray River at the Swan Hill Bridge, Swan Hill, from Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020 inclusive.
Due to the potential to affect the safety of navigation, a Regulated Area with Special Restrictions (‘the Area’) will be established for the entire width of the Murray River and for a distance of 150 metres upstream and downstream of the Swan Hill Bridge, Swan Hill, between Monday 11 May to Friday 31 July 2020.
Pursuant to section 12(3) of the Marine Safety Act 1998, Special Restrictions apply to all vessels navigating within the Area as follows:
- A maximum speed of four knots; and
- A ‘minimise wash’ zone is imposed.
Spans of the bridge affected by maintenance work may be closed to navigation, and will be marked by channel blocked markers or buoyage and patrolled by authorised officers.
The bridge maintenance will not result in a loss of functionality to the bridges lift span.
During daylight hours a closed (blocked) channel will be marked by a series of three shapes in a vertical line comprising ball–triangle–ball, and during the night or at times of restricted visibility, by a series of three lights in a vertical line comprising red–green–red.
All vessel operators and persons using the waters specified above should keep a proper lookout, comply with local buoyage and signage, and exercise extreme caution when navigating near the works.
River level conditions can be found at http://waterinfo.nsw.gov.au/drr/murray.
Transport for NSW advises:
- Persons within the vicinity of the Area must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the Special Event or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
- No unauthorised vessels are permitted to enter the Area and to do so may be an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s12(5) - Maximum Penalty $1,100.00)
