Transport for NSW is proposing to build the Amherst Street Noise Wall along the Amherst Street off ramp, Cammeray, to reduce the impact of traffic noise for residents in Jenkins Street. It would measure about 59 metres long and about 4.5 metres high.
A Review of Environmental Factors (REF), which assesses the environmental impacts of the proposal, has been prepared. All submissions received on the proposed design and REF will be considered in finalising the proposal and responded to in a Submissions Report.
We expect construction to start in late 2020, subject to approval. Construction will take about four months to complete, weather permitting.
We have been working with the local community for several years on proposed noise mitigation options for the Warringah Freeway, Cammeray. The Amherst Street Noise Wall was identified in late 2018 as part of our preferred strategy for reducing the impact of traffic noise in this area.
Feedback gathered from the community in 2018 and 2019 has been considered during the development of the proposal. Where possible, we have incorporated feedback and suggestions into our design, such as reducing the length and height of the wall, and modifying our construction work schedule so we can build the wall in a shorter time period.
We asked the community to provide feedback on the concept design for the Amherst Street Noise Wall in late 2019. We have prepared a Community Feedback Report (PDF, 994Kb) which outlines the community engagement activities carried out, the valuable comments we received and our responses.

We have prepared a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) (PDF, 43.1Mb) for the Amherst Street Noise Wall which assesses the expected impacts of the proposal. Key topics addressed in the REF include:
- Overview of the proposal including the proposed design
- Environmental impacts including biodiversity, soil and contamination, heritage and noise and vibration
- Traffic and transport
- Urban design and landscaping
- Construction methodology
- Community consultation undertaken.
You are invited to provide important feedback on the REF until Monday 7 September 2020.
To make a submission, please send your written comments via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to Amherst Street Noise Wall, Transport for NSW, Locked Bag 928, North Sydney NSW 2059.
We expect to start building the noise wall in late 2020, subject to approval. Our work schedule will be confirmed once a construction contractor has been appointed.
In December 2019, we asked the community to provide feedback on our night work schedule. Most people preferred us to work up to five nights a week between 8pm and 5am so we can complete the work one month earlier. This means it will take about four months to build the noise wall, weather permitting.
