The Australian and NSW governments are funding two individual projects to improve Appin Road. These would improve safety and support affordable housing in the Greater Macarthur Growth Area.
Project background and next steps
Appin Road is a busy state road which caters to thousands of vehicles each day, including many trucks carrying freight between Wollongong and Sydney’s south-western suburbs.
This road extends across three Local Government Areas including Campbelltown City Council, Wollondilly Shire Council and Wollongong City Council. Appin Road is predominantly one lane in each direction, with some two lane sections providing overtaking opportunities.
Transport for NSW plans to provide improvements on Appin Road with two proposed following projects:
- Appin Road upgrade between Rosemeadow and Mt Gilead
- Appin Road safety improvement work between Mt Gilead and Appin
The Appin Road safety improvement work between Mt Gilead and Appin package also includes a Link Road Corridor Study for the proposed link road. The link road would provide a key connection between Appin Road and Menangle Road and support future housing growth as part of the NSW Government’s Greater Macarthur Growth Area.
The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and concept design for Appin Road upgrade, and the REF and strategic design for Appin Road safety improvements were on exhibition from Monday 19 November to Friday 14 December 2018. A number of information sessions were also held in the local area. Community members and other stakeholders were invited to comment on the REF and concept/strategic design for the proposals.
A total of 132 submissions were received in response to the community consultation activities and exhibition of the REF, including 84 for Appin Road upgrade and 48 for Appin Road safety improvements. Key matters raised included the following:
- Koala safety, habitat and connectivity
- Traffic and access
We thank everyone for taking the time to consider the projects and for providing feedback.
The submissions were reviewed to assist in determining approval for each of the projects. After considering all feedback and responses, along with the aims and design requirements for each project, we have decided to proceed with Appin Road upgrade and Appin Road safety improvements. However, in response to concerns around protecting fauna in the area, we will install additional fauna fencing at Noorumba Reserve as part of Appin Road upgrade.
Planning for each of the projects will now progress to finalise detailed design and any further environmental considerations for the projects.
Roads and Maritime will continue to consult with key stakeholders and work collaboratively to reduce fauna deaths on Appin Road. We will continue to keep you informed of progress throughout delivery of the projects.
