The NSW Government has committed over $825 million to pinch point projects which ease congestion, reduce traffic delays and improve travel times on Sydney's major roads.
AUG 2019Project on hold
This project is currently on hold as we investigate possible solutions to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in this area.
The NSW Government investigated this proposal as part of its $300 million Urban Roads Pinch Points Program which aims to ease congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s busiest corridors.
Roads and Maritime Services investigated options to improve travel times and safety with a proposal to upgrade the intersection of the Cumberland Highway and The Horsley Drive in Smithfield.
Currently, motorists experience heavy congestion, slow travel times and delays while transferring between the Cumberland Highway and The Horsley Drive.
The aim of our proposal is to allow more road users at this intersection to queue within an extended left turn lane on the Cumberland Highway and a widened right turn lane on The Horsley Drive without restricting through traffic along the corridor. This would improve safety and increase the capacity of the intersection.
Pinch points are traffic congestion points, intersections or short lengths of road at which a traffic bottleneck exists slowing down the broader network. They cause a build up of traffic and travel delays at these spots and on the wider road network.
The proposal will improve:
• capacity of the intersection and reduce congestion
• travel times, particularly in peak hours
• traffic flow at this intersection and approaches
• safety for pedestrians and road users
In September 2018, Roads and Maritime invited feedback from local businesses, residents and stakeholders on the proposal for intersection upgrades on the Cumberland Highway and The Horsley Drive, Smithfield. View the September 2018 Have Your Say to view the proposal.
Following consultation, the project was put on hold to investigate other solutions to ease congestion and improve traffic flow in this area.
We will update the community as we continue to develop options for this ‘pinch point’.
