MAY 2020Consultation report released

In August 2019, Transport for NSW invited the community to provide feedback on proposed improvements to increase safety for road users and pedestrians at the intersections of George Street and Linda Street and George Street and Burdett Street, Hornsby. We also invited feedback on our night work schedule.

We have listened to and considered the community and stakeholder feedback and undertook further investigations into the crash data, traffic patterns and behaviours. Based on the feedback from the community and our further investigations, we will:

  • ban the right turn from Linda Street onto George Street
  • build a raised concrete median on Linda Street near George Street
  • install a pedestrian fence on George Street near Burdett Street.

We have summarised the community feedback and provided responses to the key issues raised in a community consultation report.

We will carry out these improvements between Sunday 7 June and Friday 26 June, weather permitting. We will be onsite for 10 night shifts. Our work hours will be between 8pm and 5am from Sunday to Friday. We will work up to five nights per week.

Project information

There have been a number of accidents at the intersections of George Street and Linda Street and George Street and Burdett Street, Hornsby. Some have resulted in serious injuries. The NSW Safer Roads program has proposed improvements to increase safety for pedestrians and road users at this location.

The proposed improvements included:

  • right turn ban from George Street onto Linda Street
  • right turn ban from Linda Street onto George Street
  • a dedicated right turn arrow at the signalised intersection from Burdett Street onto George Street northbound
  • a raised concrete median on George Street, where it intersects with Linda Street
  • a raised concrete median on Linda Street’s approach to George Street
  • a pedestrian fence on George Street near Burdett Street.

The proposal would:

  • improve safety by banning unsafe turns onto George Street and Linda Street and installing an addition of a dedicated right turn arrow for road users travelling north on George Street into Burdett Street
  • improve pedestrian safety with the installation of pedestrian fencing on the northern side of the George Street and Burdett Street intersection
  • ease congestion and improve traffic flow by reducing the number of crashes at these locations.

Transport for NSW have listened and considered the community and stakeholder feedback and undertook further investigations into the crash data, traffic patterns and behaviours. Based on the feedback from the community and our further investigations, we will:

  • ban the right turn from Linda Street onto George Street
  • build a raised concrete median on Linda Street near George Street
  • install a pedestrian fence on George Street near Burdett Street.

We will no longer:

  • ban the right turn from George Street onto Linda Street
  • add a dedicated right turn arrow from Burdett Street onto George Street northbound at the traffic lights
  • build a raised concrete median on George Street, where it intersects with Linda Street.

We will continue to monitor traffic patterns at these intersections and will consult the community if we propose further changes.

We will work up to five nights a week over three weeks, from Sunday 7 June. This work schedule will allow us to complete the work as quickly as possible, to minimise the disruption and reduce safety risks to workers and all road users.
